8-YEAR OLD TARGET SHOOTER AT 1100 YARDS
A young 8-year old target shooter sent us a photo and some info on his 22 Creedmoor build using a Criterion barrel purchased from Northland Shooters Supply.
Here are the specs on his barrel:
- 26” Criterion- Small Shank Savage- MTU Contour- 22 Creedmoor- 7 Twist with muzzle thread
Here is what his dad had to say about their build:
“Hey guys, just wanted to reach out and thank you for an awesome Savage Criterion barrel. My son (8 years old) loves his .22 Creed, it shoots well under 1/2 moa at 100 yards. Today we had a chance to stretch it out to 1100 yards and he went 3 for 5 and stayed under MOA on the 3 hits. The gong is 20”
We are using the 88 grain Hornady ELD-M. We have an overabundance of them at the moment. They are loaded with 33 grains of IMR 4064 powder and they are running at 3100 fps.
It is a Boyd’s stock that we cut down to his LOP. We milled the bottom of the stock flat and added an SRS arca rail. All in, the rifle weighs 13.5lbs and has almost zero felt recoil.
The crazy part is that it’s built on a Savage Axis action that I bought for $20. I did some trigger work to it and it’s breaking at 1.5lb. I added a longer bolt handle to give him some leverage because that thing is not forgiving at all to lift, especially for a kid.
It’s a blast to watch him shoot and enjoy doing it. He has been shooting since he was 4. We started him on a .22 and .17 HMR. It’s not uncommon for him to outshoot the adults when we bring out to the ranch.
Thanks again for the awesome barrel and thanks for your interest in the rifle. We will definitely be coming back to you when he is ready for a bigger rifle!”
